Fred Chalmers is a young man who has just become engaged to his girlfriend, Millie.  He discovers that he requires regular treatment on a kidney dialysis machine.  However, because of a shortage of money, the hospital simply does not have enough of these machines and is forced to make value judgements on who will receive treatment and who will not.  As Fred is single and has no children, he is refused treatment.

After being given just two months to live, Fred becomes desperate and attempts to steal a machine, injuring Dr Goldstone in the process.  The interns then suggest to Fred that if they prosecute him and take him to court, he will gain a great deal of valuable publicity for the course.  Fred agrees, even though he knows that he will not live long enough to see any benefit from the publicity.
