The play is set in Massachusetts in the late
17th century. Goodby Rigby is considered a witch and she sells
Rachel Merton a "Glass of Truth" - a mirror which will
supposedly reveal if a person is false. When she tests the man
to whom she is betrothed, Squire Richard Talbot (Pete), he is
reflected as being true.
Goodby Rickby, however, has been betrayed in
the past by Rachel's father, Justice Gilead Merton, and also dislikes
Richard Talbot because he sees through her and declares that
witchcraft is nonsense. So she and her accomplice Dickon create
a scarecrow and then turn him into a man, Lord Ravensbane. They
claim he is the long lost son of Goodby Rickby and Justice Merton and
on introducing him to the household, "Lord Ravensbane" falls
in love with Rachel, who begins to fall in love with him too.
